Cropping Images in Laserfiche 11 (Following PhotoDocs Deprecation)

asked on August 15, 2024

Hi All,

We have a client who scan lots of images (architectural/surveyance plans) into Laserfiche from a networked plotter. They currently use PhotoDocs to crop most of these images when they come into the repository, as they generally have a border around them from the plotter.

They're currently using Laserfiche Client 10.3 but we'd like to get them up to version 11 (as 10.3 is no longer supported), but in doing that they will lose PhotoDocs, and therefore the ability to crop documents in the Laserfiche repository.

As far as I'm aware there's no other way to crop images in Laserfiche? Is this something we could raise as a feature request for the Windows Client document viewer? Or is there another workaround for this?

Unfortunately due to some of the drawings being very old/faint they can't use any auto-crop options on the plotter as it often crops them incorrectly. The only other option is to drag the document outside of LF, open it in another app, then import the image again which isn't ideal.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Cheers,
Dan

Hi Daniel,

I am not familiar with PhotoDocs. Is Laserfiche Scanning being used as replacement? Does 'Crop' processing in standard mode meet client's need?

Hi Ziyan,

They are scanning through a networked machine (over SMB rather than USB) so we're not using Laserfiche Scanning to capture the images. They come from Import Agent. The size of the document also changes each time.

Kind regards,
Dan

Hi All,

Are there any plans to add any cropping/image enhancement features to the Laserfiche 12 desktop client?

Kind regards,
Dan

I’d be pretty surprised if a release like that was connected to the desktop client. At this point, the desktop client seems to be living its best retired life (even though Laserfiche hasn’t officially announced an end-of-life). The Web Client feels like the more likely place for a feature like this—or possibly an entirely new product.

Thanks Blake, I agree. It's a real shame given the window of opportunity the desktop client had going from LF11 to LF12, yet not a single new feature was added, it simply had a facelift. There are some other enhancements on the roadmap for the remainder of 2026 like a new QF etc. not sure functionality wise if it will just get the same facelift treatment or have anything new added.

We see questions a lot in tenders around image manipulation, and the fact Laserfiche cannot do something as simple as crop an image natively is just mind blowing. Microsoft paint has had this feature since Windows 1.0 in 1985!
