Forms - Directory not found to Chromium on Archive - confirmed path and tried Chrome as well

asked on July 29, 2024

On a new forms server we are getting an error that the directory is not found for Chromium, but it does not say where it is trying to look by default, so inserted the puppeteer row into the options in the database to establish a working path to the executable with no luck. So I tried the Chrome executable path instead. It just continues to say directory not found. If I run this path in Explorer it opens Chrome. Why does it think this directory is not there? It runs as Local System.

Reference for readers: Using Either Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge for PDF Generation with Forms 11 Update 2

I don't think the examples in that KB article pointing to 32-bit versions of Chrome and Edge matter vs the 64-bit versions.

I'd check if there are any additional Event Log messages with potentially relevant information.

Hi Chad,

After changing the path, a restart of routing service and recycle FormsAppPool is needed to make the changes take effect, make sure that is done first. If that's done, I'd recommend uninstall your Forms server and chromium, then reinstall Forms, see if the installed chromium version is correct or not. If you are on Forms 11U4 for later, you can enable the puppeteer logging in configuration site, and try to reproduce again, then send us the trace logs of puppeteer via a support ticket.

What version of Chromium should be installed after a fresh install?

I don't see the puppeteer information in this version of 11, but it does not have a U in it 11.0.2106.10367

I had restarted the windows service but not the app pool. Just tried restarting the app pool and still says the directory was not found. At this point I am not even using Chromium any longer so it is more of why does it think the directory is not found when File Explorer can find it.

"Forms 11U4" is a reference to Forms 11 Update 4, which is build 11.0.2307.40547 as noted in the KB link.

Build is 11.0.2106.10367 Forms 11 Update 1 Hotfix 1014332 from Sept 17, 2021. We try to ensure the "List of Changes for $ProductRelease" KB articles include the build number now.

Would highly recommend upgrading this customer's Forms installation to the latest. Even if they don't care about any new features, Forms 11 Update 1 is behind almost three years worth of security updates, including in 3rd party libraries. And it sounds like you need to be on at least Update 4 for that Puppeteer logging feature Zhiyong mentioned.

Hi Chad,

The chromium version can be a little different with different Forms installed, but basically it should be 11x.0.xxxx..., e.g. my own is 118.0.5993.0, the first part should be 3 numbers for sure. We have some users reported their chromium version starts from 7x, which is a very legacy version for Forms and they can't recall when it changed, I'm not sure if you encounter the same. So a support ticket is preferred to investigate. And I agree with Samuel, it's recommended to use latest Forms release which is Forms 11 Update 5, where we can have more logging at puppeteer side.

I would really like to get it upgraded but the database version doesn't match production so we need to upgrade their entire production system first.

When you uninstall Forms, does it uninstall Chromium? At one point we installed the wrong version of Forms, the latest version, then we uninstalled it because it did not work with the database. Does the Forms installer keep it's Chromium version aligned with the current build installed?

uninstall forms won't uninstall chromium for you, you should manually do it. Have you identified it as a wrong chromium version to use? What if you uninstall everything there and reinstall, does it help?

I am not sure how I see which Chromium version goes with which Forms build

Hi Chad,

you can go to check chromium installation folder directly, after reinstall Forms. Should be here C:\Program Files\Chromium\Application\chrome.exe by default. I think a support case would be better to identify what your issue is if you have no luck on searching by yourself.

The version of Chromium that installs from the LF installer installs to "C:\Program Files\Chromium\Application\chrome.exe", so you likely need it to be located there.

Yes, this is one of the directories that is not found, along with every directory we try to use, no matter Edge, Chrome, Chromium.

This is more of a concern that the system can not find it's own directories.
