Currently our business keeps some types of files in our Laserfiche repository and others in a fileshare server. We are looking at possibly moving everything over to Laserfiche but are concerned that the files might take up more space or that more resources will be used when interacting with these files in the Laserfiche environment.

Electronic files don't need to take up more space when you store them in Laserfiche. What does take up additional space is if you generate text or image pages from those documents. There are some advantages to doing this, in terms of a better search experience and making those documents viewable by users who don't have the native application installed. But it adds storage overhead and a bit of complexity, so it's something you should investigate a bit before deciding.
