Account Conversion Tool and 2-way Domain Trust

Hello,

We are moving users from Repository Users to Active Directory Users. The client has a 2-way domain trust in place so currently their Laserfiche Servers (and some users) are on DomainA and the majority of the users are on DomainB. This has been in place and we have users added to Laserfiche on each domain.

My question is regarding the Account Conversion Tool - does this tool have the ability to be ran from the Laserfiche Server on DomainA and convert the Repository Users to Domain users on DomainB? I know I can specify my domain in the utility but just want to confirm I won't run into issue with running it on DomainA but trying to convert users from DomainB.

Hi Ashleigh,

I think it would be helpful to clarify exactly how your users are set up currently, and which utility you are using. Our Account Migration tool can be used to migrate repository users to LFDS as Laserfiche (LFDS) users; it will not convert them to Active Directory accounts.

With that said, repository users have an option to be "linked" to a Windows account. If this is your current setup, then there is a separate account conversion utility that can be used to convert those repository accounts to Windows accounts within the repository. (This account conversion utility can usually be found here, ~~although I see that link is currently broken. Our team is looking into getting this back up~~ and the link should now be working).

Could you provide more details about what your end goal is for these users, and whether you are using one of the tools linked above?

Hi Kathleen,

The goal is to use the Account Conversion Tool to get the repository accounts converted to Active Directory Domain Accounts. The users are currently repository users with their domain accounts linked but the servers are on a different domain than the users due to their servers being hosted elsewhere through their vendor.

So the tool would be run from the server that is bound to DomainA but the goal would be to convert the users to Active Directory Accounts that exist in DomainB. There is a 2-way trust in place between the domains and the accounts in DomainB are already configured and working in Laserfiche (just not within LFDS yet).

I have never used this tool before so I just want to make sure I have reviewed any potential hiccups. My concern was if the tool would only allow me to convert users to Active Directory Accounts that exist in DomainA since that is the domain the servers are bound to and where the tool will be ran OR if I can specify DomainB in the tool to have it add the accounts that exist in DomainB.

Hi Ashleigh,

Thanks for the additional clarification. I checked with our team, and the tool has not been tested with this specific scenario of converting users across domains. Unfortunately I can't confirm whether there would be any issues with you are trying to do -- ultimately, I would recommend making a copy of the database to test the utility or taking a full backup before making any changes.
