Convert PDF Files in LF to TIFF

asked on May 31, 2024 Show version history

Hey All,

New to the LF community and looking for guidance with a workflow I've set up. Currently, on our LF cloud repository, we have a mixture of PDF and TIFF files. One of our LF users wants to be able to consolidate all of their PDF files in their Volume into TIFF files. I decided the best course of action would be to try and incorporate workflows to complete this work. To avoid causing repository wide disaster, I created a separate Folder to copy the PDF files into to be Tiff'd. I'm running into an issue; the PDFs are recreated into a TIFF, but the pages are not generated. The OCR'd text transfers over without a problem.

I've used the LF 11 client accessing our cloud repository; I've noticed if I upload a PDF and select the option Generate Pages, the PDF is Tiff'd via the workflow and the pages appear in the TIFF file. Is there a way to Generate Pages likewise in a copy? It seems odd the Generate Pages function via the LF client achieves what I want, but a copy of an existing file does not. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations?

You can use Quick Fields to do this, but not Workflow (in Cloud). Use Laserfiche Capture Engine (LFCE) to pull the documents from your Laserfiche repository that you want converted (the Retrieve Entries section) and configure the options in the Document Content section to be something like this:

I'd also consider disabling "Convert the PDF annotations..." unless you really need them to be editable; a lot of PDFs contain annotations that don't translate well.

Workflow itself does not have the ability to directly generate TIFF pages from a PDF. The reason it works from the client is that the client/repository server is doing the job, not workflow.

Laserfiche documents can have "pages" regardless of whether or not the pages have images, so your workflow is just copying what exists (i.e., pages with only a text component).

I'm not especially familiar with how everything is set up in Cloud, but in self-hosted we use the DCC server to generate pages via the "Schedule PDF Page Generation" activity.

Hey All,

The Laserfische Capture Engine did not end up working; the TIFFS created were blank. I have not found a workaround for this yet.

LFCE should work so I recommend asking your Solution Provider to open a Support Case on your behalf so that we can investigate why blank TIFFs are being generated (e.g., a configuration issue, something unusual about your PDFs, etc.).
