Configuring Workflow Email with Microsoft 365 OAuth 2.0

asked on May 1, 2024

We are working with a client to configure Workflow to use Microsoft 365 OAuth 2.0. With Forms, there are specific fields to enter the client ID and client secret, but not an option in Workflow email config. Are you able to enter the client ID and client secret into the username and password fields in WF email config or is there are correct way of setting up MS 365 OAuth 2.0 for Workflow?

Forms Version: 11.0.2311.50553

Workflow Version: 11.0.2306.898

OAuth 2.0 is not supported for authentication to SMTP servers in Workflow.

Thanks Miruna! Is there any plan to add it to workflow in the future?

We're looking into it. Microsoft has no plans to deprecate basic authentication for SMTP and has not yet updated .Net's SMTP client to support OAuth 2.0. So we'd have to look for a replacement which makes increases scope on implementation and testing. Not impossible, of course, but lower priority since there are no plans to deprecate basic authentication.

Hi Miruna,

The client is wondering when LF will support Microsoft’s Graph API.

Hi everyone,

Looks like Basic Auth for SMTP will be deprecated in September this year.

https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/blog/exchange/exchange-online-to-retire-basic-auth-for-client-submission-smtp-auth/4114750

We're hoping to migrate off our on-prem Exchange server this year but this will hold us back. Has the decision to not support OAuth been reconsidered?

Thanks,

Christian

Hi Christian,

We are working on the feature to support Microsoft Exchange Online OAuth in Workflow email. Will let you know once it's released.

Thanks

We're also awaiting this functionality as disabling modern authentication to get this working is causing problems with several users and other services.

Basic authentication can be controlled per mailbox and does not need to impact how users are accessing their mailboxes.
