How Does Forms Create Database Queries for Lookup Rules?

asked on April 10, 2024

I am curious how Forms creates the database queries for lookup rules. Does it combine all of the Lookup Rules for a form that has the same source and table/view or does it execute each one individually?

I became curious about this because of the way the Forms Layout Designer creates a new Lookup Rule each time when you create them from the field itself instead of combining them with other rules. I want to know from an efficiency point of view if I should be creating them one way or the other.

I noticed this as well and didn't like how many field rules and lookup rules I ended up with so I have been using the 'Classic' Field Rules & Lookup Rules tabs so I can combine things where it made sense. If you have a multitude of hidden fields, I like to put them all in one rule.

Hi Blake,

From your description, you seems to open the Rules tab from a specific field, but you can also focus on the whole form and opens the Rules tab to create rules.

The rules should  be executed individually and if you have rules configured for same fields, the result maybe overwritten by last executed one.
