Our DB admin cleared some space and restarted the server, and it seems to be working well again.

Check the disk space on your server hosting the Web Client. I don't know why this would only be appearing for certain kinds of documents, but I've run into this before and sure enough, the web server had no disk space remaining. Clearing out some old folders fixed it.

The reason this shows up for some documents and not others is because this message comes from the Document Preview Service, which is used to render Office documents.
