If you make a field required for the template and you have existing entries without that value, then you would likely run into errors trying to update those entries until that value has been set.

Essentially, the admin console won't prevent you from making that a required field for the template, but anything without that value would be rendered invalid preventing users and workflow from saving most types of changes until the new requirements are satisfied.
