Question

pdf does not contain any trailer objects

asked on November 30, 2023 Show version history

I have a user that is trying to upload pdf documents and gets an import error of "PDF does not contain any trailer objects,.  And it will not let her import the document(s) into the repository.

She has uploaded similar documents before with no issue.

These documents are archived from a system called O-Court.  The application archives them into a sharepoint folder and staff drags/imports them into Laserfiche.

I cannot find information on this so anything would help.  Thank you!

A "trailer" is a particular part of a pdf document that is important to be able to find to read it correctly. In general, Laserfiche doesn't inspect the documents you attempt to import - since we allow all types of files, it's not really possible in general. But for certain types of files, we support operations like page extraction. If you have an option like that checked during the import, we need to be able to successfully read the document.

It is likely that there is something not quite right with that particular pdf. Other applications may not have a problem with it, but it may trip up the page generation library. PDF is a complicated format, and it's not uncommon to see different behaviors like that, or for many applications to be able to handle technically incorrect documents.

Turning off page generation may get you past this step, but if you require pages I think you'll need to open a support case so we can take a look at the document.

Thank you!  So stupid question - I have a generate text but there is no generate pages in Advanced.  There is security and audit report, no generate pages option.

This is the cloud Laserfiche - I think that was understood but wanted to be sure.

:D

It's going to depend on the file type, but for pdfs there should be "Generate Pages" under the Advanced menu. It might not be there if you don't have rights, but it should require the same permissions as Generate Text. The only other thing I can think is that if customized your toolbar items then it might be on the toolbar proper.

Was there any official answer to this question. I have one user that is experiencing the same issue every single morning!! Most times it will give her the error the first attempt at importing, then if she imports the exact same document a second time (without making any changes at all) it imports successfully.

Hi Veronica, this error indicates that the PDF was recognized as invalid during page generation. Do we know how the user imported the file—via Import Agent or Laserfiche clients? Also, was the "Generate PDF Pages" option unchecked during the second attempt?

The user has tried both drag and drop to an Intake folder in the LF web client and also using the Import button. Once she gets the error, she hits cancel, and then does the exact same import process and it works. It seems to be limited to this user and just started happening this week. I can grab the exact same file and it will import fine the first time so I am unable to duplicate the issue, but it happens every morning.
