Question

Forms Submissions OCR

asked on November 28, 2023

Client is wondering if forms submissions and attachments can be OCR'd during the process of being stored into the repository.

The account that is setup for the store to repository activity is configured to Generate text by default for imports.

With the option to generate pages for PDFs checked, Pages are generated and text is also generated.

Text isn't generated for Tiff images.

Is this beahvior to be expected?

Generating text and OCRing are two different processes. Generating text is used on electronic documents to extract the text that is embedded in such a file. OCRing uses an OCR application that reads the characters of a document and tries to give a best guess as to what they are to give you results. OCR is included as part of the Windows Client installation or can be done in the Web Client or Workflow by utilizing a Distributed Computing Cluster (DCC).

There is a setting in the client to use OCR when importing PDFs, but I don't think that works if you are not using the client.

I just did a test using Forms 11.0.2307.40556 and Laserfiche Server 11.0.2.338 and saving a submitted form as a PDF with the option in the client 'Use native text extraction (recommended)' selected and it extracted all of the text from the form as expected. What version of Forms are Laserfiche Server are you using?

LFS is 11.0.2.338 and Forms is 11.0.2307.40556. With the option in the Client  'Use native text extraction (recommended)' checked,  Text is neither generated for the submitted PDF nor the attached PDF.

It only generates text in my testing which I include the option for pages to be generated for PDFs. In this case, both the submitted form in PDF format and an uploaded/attached PDF have text generated.
