Question

Is there a Directory Server no domain option available yet?

asked on October 10, 2023

For clients that do not have a domain controller, is there a Directory Server version of Laserfiche including DS Auth available?

As of 2018 we were told no and the current documentation still says things like:

"Ensure that the account running the tool has read and write access to the Laserfiche Server database" which is not possible when there is no domain and the SQL server is not running on Windows.

Directory Server is still only supported when installed in a domain environment. Technically you can get it to work in a non-domain environment, but it is not supported.

Ok, I thought maybe so. In the past we had multiple features not working and issues and could not open support cases.

Admin guide: Installing Laserfiche Directory Server

Note: Laserfiche Directory Server does not support Windows workgroups.

Also, re:

You can get get through the installation and get some things working but not everything, and all sorts of low-level core functionality will be either not working or in a degraded state.

Sometimes "not supported" means "technically not supported and we haven't tested that, but if you know what you're doing it should probably be fine, and be aware upgrades might wipe your config". E.g., modifying various web application files for UI customizations.

This is firmly of the "that configuration is not supported because it's fundamentally broken, we know exactly why, and there's no reasonable workaround" type.

We have no plans to support Laserfiche Directory Server (LFDS) installation on Windows workgroups.

We have no problems with the non-LFDS systems when there is no domain on the other hand. They just create manage users in Laserfiche instead of using Active Directory and all services work just fine.

Correct. The above is purely about LFDS, which introduces AD dependencies.
