Error Message: The requested portion of the document does not exist. [9003]

asked on September 26, 2023 Show version history

Hello Team,

One of my customer is encountering an error while attempting to open a document from the Laserfiche repository - "Error Message: The requested portion of the document does not exist. [9003]"

After browsing through the file system(Laserfiche\DEFAULT\), it becomes apparent that the folder corresponding to the file path within in the repository is empty , which seems to provide an explanation for the issue.

Upon closer examination, the files are exclusively absent from the "e00" folders within the default volumes 00/01/02. Additionally, the last modified date for these folders with the missing files is identical. However, the files and folders remain intact within the "e00" folder in all subsequent volumes.

Is there a method we can employ to determine the cause behind the removal of these files? Are there any possibility of recovering these files?

Thanks in advance.

If the files are missing, it's likely the only way to restore them is from a recent backup. If the Laserfiche server had moved them intentionally, it would be trying to load them from the new location.

It's suspicious that the folders are missing entirely - I don't believe that the Laserfiche server will delete folders like that, even if e.g. you migrated all of the documents to a different volume. Is it possible an administrator moved them accidentally? Maybe they are in a different location on the drive?

Thank you for the response Brian.

Just to clarify, "DEFAULT\DEFAULT00001\e00" folder is present, but the files inside them are empty. From your response, "If the Laserfiche server had moved them intentionally, it would be trying to load them from the new location",keen to understand the following

1.Can you please describe a situation where Laserfiche intentionally relocates files?

2.Is there a method to determine the new location from which Laserfiche is attempting to retrieve the files?

Thank you.

The screenshot shows that the files are not present in the folder, doesn't it? Not to be pedantic, but the files being present but empty would suggest different hypotheses. The Laserfiche server will only move the file on disk if it has been requested to move that document to another volume. And in that case, it would now be trying to load it from the location on the new volume (and the UI would show it being assigned to the other volume, etc). You can use a tool like Process Monitor to see exactly what file system calls LFS is issuing - it would be very interesting if the paths don't match the what is in the UI.

Thank you Brian, you are correct, it is an empty folder (not a file that is empty :)).

Other than the customer adding disk space to the drive, I don't believe there have been any alterations to the volumes.

Additionally, I found this quite intriguing. The images below display the properties of two files (pdf opens - image at the top/word has an issue)located within the same folder in the Laserfiche repository(which also has documents that appear to have issues), and it is possible that they were imported as a group of documents together. They both points to the "e00" folder for file path but the image points to folder "00" for pdf)

Also, I am not able to retrieve any information from performance monitor. Is there any document related to the monitor that i can refer to dive deep.

Thnak you.

That is as expected - image pages are stored in a different folder structure from other file types, such as pdf. Note that the structure on disk is different from the structure in the repository. If you move an entry in the repository, that is a simple database update and does not require moving the file on disk. The storage locations on disk are assigned sequentially, so you would expect pdfs or msg files imported at the same time to be stored in similar locations on disk.

The tool I suggested is Process Monitor, which is available from Microsoft's site.
