Hi Lynn, that's not a built in option but I have requested it many times.

The document should inherit the RM retention from the parent, so if the set up the folders first and apply RM to them, then any document you put in those folder should inherit the retention from the parent. Other than that, you would need to create a workflow to apply the Retention schedule whenever a new document was created based on the template assigned. Unfortunately Workflow cannot assign retention based on Template dynamically, so you just need to create conditions in workflow for that which is why I prefer the Inheritance if you can make that work.
