Generating a PDF view link for scanned TIFF documents with user-specific watermarks and printing permissions

asked on June 26, 2023

Hello everyone,

I am currently working with Laserfiche and have a specific requirement regarding document viewing, watermarks, and printing permissions. I would greatly appreciate your guidance on how to achieve the following:

  1. Generating a link that allows users to view Laserfiche documents in PDF format, even if the original documents were scanned as TIFF files.

  2. Implementing user-specific watermarks on the PDF view of the documents. Is there a way to add watermarks dynamically based on user information or preferences?

  3. Granting or restricting printing permissions for documents and users. Can I control the ability to print documents within Laserfiche based on specific permissions or user roles?

I would be grateful for any insights, recommendations, or pointers to relevant documentation or resources that can help me accomplish these tasks within Laserfiche.

Thank you in advance for your assistance!

Hi, hope some of this helps.

  1. Generating a link that allows users to view Laserfiche documents in PDF format, even if the original documents were scanned as TIFF files.

Not sure if I totally understand the requirement. But, you can email a documemt that is a tiff and select to send it as a PDF.

I am not seeing a watermark as something you can add to a document. There are annotations, like stamps, that a user could add.

When I went to print, I am able to add a watermark.

  4. Printing is a right that can be assigned.

  • Generating a link that allows users to view Laserfiche documents in PDF format, even if the original documents were scanned as TIFF files.

Any TIFF can be downloaded as PDF in the client. Are these named users? Are they using a Laserfiche client (Windows, web) to view documents or are they using WebLink? Make sure the user/group has the "Export" feature right. You can use a workflow to generate a link (either for the client or WebLink) or just email them a shortcut, but this would be to the original that they would have to then export as PDF. You could also just use a workflow to send an email and attach a copy of the file as a PDF (Properties for New Attachment / Attach a copy of the document / Include images as PDF)

Yes, it is possible, but without some SDK magic, it would have to be a custom text box annotation rather than a stamp watermark, since stamps only use static designs. One way to accomplish this would be to have a request form in Forms that will prompt them to enter something that uniquely identifies the document, then a workflow that will find the document, create a copy, apply the text box annotation using the requester's information, then save the copy/email it/create a link/etc (from your first question).

"Print" is a feature right that can be controlled using repository groups. When limiting printing, you may also want to limit exporting so that they cannot just save the document and then print it.
