Audit Trail Can't Set Forms Default Audit Log Folder to Network Path

asked on May 1, 2023 Show version history

I just installed the upgrade to Audit Trail 11 Update 4 (Version 11.0.2210.3156) over the weekend, and it appears to be working.  After some back and forth between the servers, I have it so that both Forms servers reported they were connected when I enabled the auditing.

They had instructed me to set the default folder within the Audit Trail Configuration, and I have that working, but not how I want.

When I went to Audit Trail Configuration and went to the Forms tab, and tried to set the default folder, it would not accept any folder path that was for a network location, such as \\SERVERNAME\AUDIT_LFFORMS.  It works for our other audit logs, from the repository, but it isn't working for the logs for Forms, I had to select a location on the C drive to get it to work.

Is there a weird trick to get this to work, or is it possibly a bug?

I checked the Audit Trail source code and it seems the Forms audit log location path validation rejects UNC paths. Couldn't tell you why - I'm filing an issue for it.

Can you add that network location as a mapped drive on the Audit Trail server?  Make sure it's mapped for the "Laserfiche Audit Trail Event Hub" service identity or computer account (if using a built-in service identity like Local System). That should work as the path validation checks are mostly around string formatting. Ex: "X:\AUDIT_LFFORMS\"

Okay, thank you @████████ for confirming.  Hopefully they'll consider that issue something that needs to be changed, because it would be preferrable to have the UNC path in place instead of the mapped drive workaround.

I'm currently waiting to hear back from other members of our team to see if they are even comfortable doing the mapped drive workaround.  If not, I'm going to be stuck keeping these files on the local drive until such time that the configuration is updated to allow UNC paths.

This is filed as Audit Trail bug # 404222 "Cannot use UNC path as Forms audit source audit log folder".
