Question

Large logical volume, small physical volumes

asked on March 6, 2023

We are preparing to upgrade from version 10 to 11. Our largest repository holds around 8 TB, all in a single logical volume. The maximum physical volume size is set to 20GB, so we have several hundred of them.

Will the large logical volume or the large number of physical volumes cause me problems in the future? Should I look to change the volume structure of the repository, and if so, where can I find instructions on how to do that?

I would welcome references to documentation on these topics. Thank you.

You should be fine since you're using a logical volume. Our biggest repository is around 30TB and it uses a single logical volume with the 20GB size limit on physical volumes.

The most likely "issue" you might run into is a delay or unresponsiveness trying to load the full list of physical volumes when accessing the logical volume's properties in the admin console.

Thanks Jason,

It'll be quite a few years before we have a 30T repository, so I won't worry. and yes, I have noticed that it can take a while to load in admin console, although last time I tried it was still under a minute.

All the best!
