Question

Can you use gcServer setting when not configuring a Forms routing service cluster?

asked on March 6, 2023

I noticed in the new documentation for "Configuring a Forms Routing Service Cluster" that there is a setting mentioned for configuring the Primary Forms Server to use the server garbage collection instead of the workstation garbage collection. According to the Performance Benefits chart it gives quite the increase in performance when enabled. Is this setting only available to use when Configuring a Forms Routing Service Cluster or can it be used outside of that with Forms 11?

Hi Blake,

gcServer setting can be applied to routing service outside a cluster, and there will also be performance improvement depending on how heavy load routing is experiencing. This option mainly improve performance when application is under heavy load.

In fact, asp.net applications enable gcServer by default.

The drawback is that it will consume more cpu/memory compared to services with gcServer disabled. And that's why we donot enable it by default.

Would you only enable it on the Primary Forms Server or on all the servers in a cluster environment (when not configuring the forms routing service for a cluster)?

When configure a cluster, we assume Routing services are all under pressure, so we suggest enable gcServer in all Forms servers in a cluster.

When routing service is running as singleton, if you think your routing service is under pressure, you can try enable gcServer and it should bring some performance enhancement.
