Question

Office Integration & External Access

asked on February 28, 2023 Show version history

Hi Laserfiche,

When connecting externally via a laptop (domain joined or not) using an externally presented web client URL, how do you get the office integration to connect to this web URL?

When trying to attach the repository, it's looking for a Laserfiche server host name:-

Obviously this host can't be connected to remotely as it's inside the network, entering the external web client address doesn't resolve the repository.

How can you configure this, or is this simply not supported?

This is Office integration version - 11.0.2212.483

Cheers!

This feature has been reinstated as part of the Office Integration May 2023 Update. With this update you are now able to attach a repository using a web client URL and reconnect after the session times out using web client, even if you do not have access to the Laserfiche Server directly.

Hi Chris,

If the repository is reachable from that device (for example if they can connect successfully through the web client from that laptop) they should be able to log in via the Office Integration as well. You will need to make sure a reachable Laserfiche Server host name is entered into that field, as well as the correct respoitory name.

Can you clarify what behavior you are seeing currently, where "entering the external web client address doesn't resolve the repository"? Is the user propmpted to log in, or do they receive an error message before they get to that point?

Hi Kathleen,

Thanks for the reply. This is part of the problem, the Laserfiche server isn’t accessible externally, only the web server. But as you can see the attach repository box in the office integration above is expecting a Laserfiche app server host name.

Interestingly, my colleague who is on an older office integration version sees 2 options when attaching a repository, one with a web url and the box shown above.

What I’m trying to understand is how or why is the office integration sign in options different, and how can you control that behaviour?

Cheers!

Chris

Hi Chris,

A roundabout way to add the repository profile is have the user open an Office document in the repo and select "Edit With -> Microsoft Word/Excel/PPT (Edit on your desktop)". This adds the repo profile automatically. Once it opens, they can close the document in the desktop app.

At a technical level, the repository profiles are stored under the following registry key:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Laserfiche\LFOfficePlugin\Profile\IPDatabase\$repoName

The keys under there are shown in the attached image.

Where the "WAURL" value is:

https://webclient.example.com:443/laserfiche/App_Services/OfficeIntegrationService.asmx?repo=LaserRepository

Thanks for the reply Sam, I've already got the WA URL set in here (I did this manually a while ago for something else).

However when I load word manually (not from opening a document in Laserfiche) I don't get the option to set a web repository, only a host name one?

This is when attaching a repository:-

What's really strange, is when my colleague who's on an older version (11.0.0.404) get's this box instead when selecting attach repository:-

Where he gets the option of a network repository (which is essentially what I need). I can't get that box to appear on my system for some reason?

Any ideas?

The feature was dropped for newer versions of Laserfiche Office plug-in because we were not able to support LFDS logins to the web client. It was inadvertent and we are currently looking into ways to bring it back.

Thanks Miruna. It’s really important that this feature it reinstated. Is there any timeline on when it might be back? Cheers.

Thanks Alexandria,

Just a quick FYI, the 2 hyperlinks for windows and web client both have the same URL and download. Is it the same package? If not please can you share the windows client download URL.

Cheers!

They are the same package. For Windows client you just run the .exe in the .zip file and for Web Client you can copy the files to the folder specified. We will update the KB to be more clear.
