Moving Database from SQL Strandard to SQL Express

asked on February 16, 2023 Show version history

Hey All,

I'm currently having a small issue when it comes to the SQL Express. The client is working with SQL Express Edition and had his Laserfiche Repository Databased fully expanded (reached 10Gb).

Currently, users are not able to delete, add or edit any folder/documents in the respository and an error is being generated (general database error). Checking the event viewer,  it indicates that it's caused by the Databse being full.

As a workaround, until the customer renews his license, i'm trying to use another Laserfiche License to move the database there, decrease its size by deleting unwanted files that can be imported another time and then revert back to the customer license registered on the Laserfiche Express Edition and restore the database with a decreased size.

Do you think i will face any problems when it comes to restoring the amended database back to the Express Edition  after it being registered on the Standard ?

From SQL side, i did my research and the restoring is valid. Is Laserfiche applying any differences on the repository database between both editions that might keeps me from restoring the databse back to the express edition?

Or else, do you have any other methods to shrink the database size ? i tried shrinking the database files with no success

Regards,

Edit 1: I also tried deleting some files from Laserfiche Repository, also with no success as deleting is not an options in first place. at each action, i'm getting the "general database error" error.

Is deleting straight from the Laserfiche Databse an option. Is there a query that can be used to make sure an entry is delted taking into consideration all related/linked tables?

Edit 2: Not doing anything nor did anything, just checking and planning my options

After some troubleshooting, I encountered the same issue and concluded that SQL Express, by design, has certain limitations. As a result, I had to upgrade to SQL Standard. However, I am currently running both SQL Express and SQL Standard on the same machine, but with different root folder names. Additionally, it's worth noting that there is a cost associated with upgrading from SQL Express to SQL Standard.

If you're looking for a quick and dirty solution to tide you over until the customer sorts their SQL standard license/environment, try SQL Developer. This doesn't have any limitations so you won't hit the 10GB limit.

(note it's not to be used commercially etc. but as a temporary solution, you haven't got many options here.

Check in the windows event viewer on the Laserfiche application server (LFS) under the admin logs you should see a more informative error message as to what's going wrong in SQL. Failing that check the SQL error logs.
