Audit Trail Error - Value cannot be null. Parameter name: source

asked on January 11, 2023

We're having a strange issue in Audit Trail 11.0.0.2013.  All of a sudden, and for no reason that we can see, our Audit Trail Reporting has stopped working.  Our saved reports are no longer there, just a message "No Saved Report".

Going to the Audit Trail Reporting main screen or trying to save a new report pops up a very unhelpful error stating "The application has encountered an unknown error. (OperationID: abe855caef1f489ca1c66bd8b794a9be)".  The OperationID changes every time.

Event Viewer isn't much help either.  An error and warning are generated, and the error states "Value cannot be null. Parameter name: source".  The warning says "Type: STR_WARN_GENERAL_EXCEPTION" along with a stack trace that doesn't give any insights.

Data collection and indexing are still working, and we can still run ad-hoc searches successfully.  Just no love from saved reports.  Has anyone seen anything like this before?  I'm thinking there may be some corrupted configuration data but it's not clear what.  Looking through the database doesn't present anything obvious.

Hi, Stephane,

The cause is likely to be some corruption in the saved report storage. To address this issue, I think you can first try:

1. Back up the saved report storage by copying folder "%ProgramData%\Laserfiche\AuditAnalytics\report_templates\" to another location
2. Restart service "Laserfiche Audit Trail Reporting Service" and "Laserfiche Audit Trail Importing Service"

If the problem persists, you can reset the saved report storage by:

1. Back up and delete the saved report storage by moving folder "%ProgramData%\Laserfiche\AuditAnalytics\report_templates\" to another location
2. Stop service "Laserfiche Audit Trail Reporting Service" and "Laserfiche Audit Trail Importing Service"
3. Start service "Laserfiche Audit Trail Reporting Service" and "Laserfiche Audit Trail Importing Service"

By doing so, you should be able to create new saved report on Audit Trail Reporting Site but existing saved reports will be unavailable. There might be somehow to recover the existing saved report from the backup depending on the corruption.

Thank you Jiajun, that was exactly the cause of the problem.  Somehow the reports_metadata.json file was blank; clearing them out and restarting the services recreated the files/folders and Audit Trail is now working again.  I appreciate your help!
