Question

OCR Settings - Accuracy, Balanced, Speed

asked on January 9, 2023

I was wondering if other people are having the same experience that I have.  I've found that setting the Quickfields Whole Page OCR to "Accuracy" actually results in poorer accuracy than "Speed" or "Balanced".

For example, using the "Accuracy" setting, I was looking to pattern match a 9 digit identification number.  On about 400 documents, there were 53 failures, despite the documents all being quite clean. Some were bizarre - numbers from the 9 digit id number added to the word above, and in one case numbers added to the ID number that I cannot find the source of.  Over this morning, I've run the 53 through until I got down to 9 files that could not be recognized, despite being clean documents.  The issues with these files were consistent across Quick Fields processing attempts.

I ran the same set of files through using the "Speed" setting, and there were no failures in identifying the 9 digit id number, all the files worked perfectly.

Is this something other people have observed as well?

I've observed the same using Quick Fields and the various quality settings in that better results can be observed using the speed or balanced setting, but not consistently. As you mention also, sometimes the failures seem unusual, i.e. the text appears very clear to the human eye but QF doesn't quite pick it up.

I'm glad I'm not the only person.

A trick I often use is to copy the zone output into Notepad++. It will let you see hidden characters (spaces, character returns etc.) that the OCR picked up on and that you may not have otherwise seen. That way I can write those unseen characters in my reg-ex or account for wrong wrong character misinterpretations using substitution

Good suggestion - thank you.

I have not noticed this. I have noticed that setting your character preference under advanced options makes a huge difference

I see it now - you are using Zone OCR.  I may have to try that, I tend to you full page OCR.

I find just using zone makes a HUGE difference

Thanks for this suggestion Tegan - I've been using it ever since, and you are right - it does make a huge difference.  To save on processing, I use it as a backup if the first "full page" OCR doesn't work, but am considering getting rid of the full page OCR all together.

Could you give me more information about the character preference?  I haven't seen that setting.  What options work well for you?
