Could not find the associated Office application

posted on October 17, 2022

We've come across and issue where we are getting an error message when attempting to engage the Laserfiche Web Office integration.  Receiving an error, could not find the associated Office application.

This is a known issue where Microsoft has stopped adding the path to office applications to the registry so Laserfiche is unable to find the applications.  Here is how to test if the registry path is, in fact, missing:  In the Run dialog, type excel.exe or winword.exe.  If it produces a message saying the Application could not be found, you will need to complete the steps below:

Open the registry and edit the value for the following:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\Winword.exe HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\Excel.exe

Set the (Default) value under each key to be the full path of the respective exe file for each application, for example: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\WINWORD.EXE and C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\EXCEL.EXE

You may need to change the paths above if the actual winword.exe and excel.exe files are not located in those paths. This registry change would need to be made for all machines experiencing the issue.

Do you have a link to the known issue? I'm curious if it's a bug that will be resolved or if there was a decision to make that change.

Unfortunately I don't have a link to the known issue.  This info came straight from your support team and I just wanted to pass it along to anyone that has the same issue.  From LF Support:

The office plugin requires the path to be specified in the registry to be able to locate the executable, otherwise the plugin has no way of knowing where the office applications are actually installed on any particular machine. I have seen some Microsoft support threads that suggests this issue comes up when Microsoft Office 365 is installed alongside another version of Office, and then the older version is uninstalled, which removes the registry entries. This may be the root of the issue for why the registry entry isn't present. However again, if this is the root cause, this isn't something Laserfiche can fix from our end and the fix would have to come from Microsoft.
