Setting a lower limit to file name length

asked on August 16, 2022

Hello all,

I have a client who is trying to limit the file name length of some or all files in Laserfiche to no more than 50 characters to meet archiving requirements.

I know we can do this with the length of Metadata fields, but is this possible with the length of the file name itself?

Regards,

For most values described in the System Limits documentation, there isn't a way for an administrator to proactively enforce a lower limit. What you might consider is having a workflow that triggers on creation and rename events, which renames entries to something that meets your requirements.

That said, I'd be interested to hear more about the archiving requirement. Does it come from a particular authority? What problem is it trying to avoid?

Hi Jeremy,

It's not exactly what you're asking for but the solution I have used is to remove "rename" rights from everyone, and to have Workflow set the file names based off of metadata.
