Question

Question

compress photos on import

asked on August 10, 2022

We have a client who saves a lot of photos (LF Cloud)

What are some ways to compress these files without losing resolution?  If it is possible?

Thank you

Depends on the original format.  If they're JPEGs then they're already subject to lossy compression.  As far as I know, the only commonly used lossless compression format is TIFF (which is why Adobe and Laserfiche use it).

James is correct. Many images will already have some compression, but you can't really "shrink" image file sizes by a substantial amount without loss.

However, there are "lossy" compression types available with TIFF that can also affect the size. For example,

TIFF LZW is lossless but it can generate some fairly large files for color photos.

TIFF JPEG is lossy and generates much smaller files, but the difference in quality is much more noticeable on something like a photo.

TIFF Group 4 would make the smallest files, but it is monochrome so it is primarily only useful for black and white pages like simple text documents.
