Forms - User Task Print Button disabled when displaying PDFs inline

asked on August 8, 2022

The print button for user tasks is disabled if you choose this option in a file upload field and the user uploads a PDF

Is this on purpose? It works if the user uploads an image, but not if they upload a PDF

The only way they can print their task is to delete the PDF

Hi Chad,

Thanks for reporting the issue. It is known issue (ID 217588) in Forms and currently we haven't got a fix for it.

@████████- it appears that using Firefox could be a work-around; have you verified this?

Can I get more information on the issue and whether it's being worked on?  My network administrator currently only authorizes our users to have Chrome and Edge browsers on their workstations and is very hesitant to allow another browser in the user environment.  He would like to know as much as possible about this bug/issue and if or when it will be resolved.  If possible, he would like to have a conversation with an engineer at LF about this.  Thank you.

Hi Mike,

Yes, I can verify that it works with Firefox (103.0.2). It seems happen with Chromium-based browser only, and related to browser version according to https://stackoverflow.com/questions/58184103/window-print-is-not-working-in-chrome-77-version

The bug happens when user print submitted form or user task form, with embedded PDF preview.

Currently we don't have a fix or solution for this bug yet. As a workaround, is it possible for you to disable 'show uploaded image' option for the file upload field, at least for those accept pdf files?

Hi Ziyan,

It's actually a user requirement for this LF Forms project for the uploaded files to be shown in preview mode so unfortunately that would not be an acceptable workaround.  Based on that stackoverflow thread it appears that the issue has existed for almost 3 years and is specific to Chrome; so, unless LF has a way of overriding that behavior it appears we are stuck with this issue until Chrome is updated with a fix, correct?

Hi Mike,

I see. Is printing the user task also required? Does the print need PDF preview on it? I am also thinking of workaround like hide the print button.

And you are correct. Laserfiche Forms will need to override the behavior or find other workaround to make printing user task works for this certain scenario. I guess it was considered as bug on Chrome side when we first looked into the problem. While since it hasn't changed for years, we may need further investigation on this.

Hi Ziyan,

Yes, printing the user task is a requirement and it must include the preview of uploaded images and PDFs.  Thank you.

Hi Mike,

Our dev has further investigated the bug and found a feasible solution. We plan to fix it in Forms next release targeting end of this year.

We improved the behavior with classic form designer in Forms 11 Update 3 to support print the form in user task when there is pdf that show preview. But the preview of the pdf will not appear in the printed form.
