Instance will terminate

I am trying to publish a change to a client's process that needs to be in place by midnight this upcoming Monday, but I am getting this message. Is there any way to find out which instance will terminate if I update?

You can go into Monitor and filter results for the process you are working on to determine what task is currently at a step you have changed or use the Task Loads report.

I got this same message earlier when all I changed was who receives a certain email, after already making sure no instances were at that step. I was unable to publish that change for the same reason.

Is there any way to actually see if and where a configuration problem might exist in a gateway that is causing this type of message? 

I was able to publish recent processes to ALL without any issues, however removing a significant number of tasks that were not being used, and adding a new inclusive gateway, all of sudden I am getting the message as well.
