asked on June 13, 2022

If I am using a 30 day cloud trial, how do I download the Windows Client to see how it works?

Chad,

The Windows client install is still bundled with the premise server installation files.  They don't want to make it easy...  ;-)

Those are not available to cloud trial customers right? This is from the perspective of someone using the cloud trial, not a licensed client.

Installing the Windows client doesn't require an activation key.

How can they download the installer though?

I don't think they can?  I usually handle the client installation during a site visit or via a remote session on the target workstation.

My guess is that LF would point you towards using the web client (signin.laserfiche.com) versus the thick client anyway.  That being said, I recommend  that customers consider the thick client when doing heavy scanning.

We just have someone who wants to try before they buy is all, but even as a VAR I don't know where to get an isolated installer to upload to their workstation.

In the past when I tried to remove the Windows Client folder from the Big Package, it failed, so I don't play with it anymore.

So no option for potential clients to use the Windows Client before buying then? Outside of giving them the installer for every server platform LF offers?

I don't think a stand-alone installer is available for the Windows Client.  When I have installed it for Cloud customers I just run the latest version of the full premise installer package and only select the 'Windows Client Installation' option.

If a stand-alone installer existed I would use it.

Ok, I just think it is a little strange to upload and host the Big Package to a Google Drive (which is the only reasonable way to do it since I don't want to make them wait at 5/Mbps for me to upload 10 server apps on an active session)

Like I said, they don't make it easy!  wink

Well for so many years, it was not possible for anyone to try anything until they bought it, so it seems there is a lot more they can get their hands on before they buy now.

Hi Chad,

  1. A couple things - You should be able to pull the windows client out of the larger self-hosted Laserfiche Rio/Subscription package by grabbing the windows client and support/OCR folders. You're right just the windows client itself
  2. It makes sense that it's not downloadable as a prospect since they wouldn't have a support site account - as you note, even having the trial option is relatively new for a SaaS scenario. Do you run into this with other desktop installed applications such as Import Agent and Quick Fields?
  3. Curious where you are encountering looking to have prospects try out the windows client during a SaaS trial scenario? Are there certain workstreams or scenarios where you find that it's important to showcase the windows client in a trial scenario?

Thanks, maybe I was missing these support folders last time I tried.

This is the first request I have received, in this case the client heard there was a Windows Client with real time view of the folders.

They asked if they could try it out because they did not like how the folder view was not real time without a refresh in the web client, specifically while testing and learning the workflow system for the first time. I guess it was driving them nuts not knowing if the file they were looking at was in the folder or not without refreshing.

There could be other scenerios were someone wants to see a feature of the desktop client that the web client can not do, like uploading folders, opening 3rd party documents, etc though.

Hrm interesting.

For what it's worth, we moved away from the auto-updating folders due to the sheer number of complaints and confusion about the folder listing refreshing while people were working in it and 'entries vanishing out from under people'. You may want to note that the in-application refresh button should have a dot indicating when something is changed so you know if a refresh would be relevant or not:

(Also, hold that thought on uploading folders wink)

Oh I did not know a dot appears, that should solve the concern in that they are refreshing just to see if they need to refresh. Does that refresh button refresh the folder too? It only indicates that it refreshes the metadata pane when you click on it.

Yes, I believe it only refreshes the folder itself if there are changes, otherwise that could be a lot of folder load for no gain. It's a little subtle, maybe we'll see if there's a way for us to call it out a bit more!

Well it is cool once you learn it, but I have not even used it once as a user myself. I tend to click away and back into the folder as that was the most intuitive way to refresh without knowing how the refresh button worked.

Sounds like a good takeaway on my part is how we can make that clearer! It frustrates me when we've got functionality people don't know about it, but it's not at all correct to just say 'why didn't you know about it'. People shouldn't have to figure it out, we need to make it more obvious.
