annotations on Word or Excel document in V11

asked on May 17, 2022

Hi, It would appear that V11 is unable to add annotations to Word or Excel docs. Our research would indicate that you cannot generate pages for Word or Excel saved to the repo as there is a built in viewer now for those formats. as a result we can't annotate (especially redact). The only work around I see is to convert and generate pages. This seems very cumbersome. Am I missing a config setting somewhere or is there another work around I have not considered. Thanks in advance.

Laserfiche Annotations can only be applied to native Laserfiche documents (i.e. TIFF pages) because they are associated with the page images and depend on things you can't do with a Word or Excel file like knowing the pixel dimensions of each page for proper positioning, sizing, etc.

You can still generate pages for Office formats just like PDF and the built-in viewer is there because in many cases people just want to store/edit the files in their native format.

Thanks Jason, it does not allow us to generate pages for MS Office documents although we can on other formats. when we generate pages, there is no error message but pages do not generate for MS Office. Perhaps a setting or configuration I am missing somewhere?

Are you trying to open it without removing the Electronic File? If so, when you open the document it's just going to open the original even if you've generated pages.

Try right-clicking and selecting "Open > Pages" after you've generated pages. My guess is the pages generated, but you still have the docx or xlsx attached so it defaults to opening that when you open the document.

If you want to have the annotations and everything you'll probably want to delete the electronic file (under Tasks) after you've generated the pages.
