Question

Quick Fields shows 0 pages in PDF file that I'm trying to scan

asked on April 21, 2022

The pdf file exists in my repository. I moved it to a folder where I can run it through Quick Fields in order to remove color and set the dpi.  When I run it through Quick Fields, it says that the document has 0 pages, and ends up scanning nothing.

Here are the settings for the Quick Fields session:

As a test, I downloaded the PDF and ran it through Import Agent with the following settings and then ran it through Quick Fields successfully:

I do not understand why Quick Fields wouldn't scan the original document correctly, but it did scan the file that had been downloaded and run through Import Agent.  Please let me know what could be going on here and if there's a way to get Quick Fields to scan the original PDF correctly.

Thank you.

Please try checking the "If the entry already has Laserfiche pages, overwrite them" checkbox before you open a support case because that is likely the cause (e.g., the PDFs may have had text pages generated when they were imported, without image pages, so no image pages are being generated in QF).

So, if I understand correctly, Quick Fields does not generate pages for the PDF when using LFCE but DOES generate pages when using Universal Capture?

Please see this post https://answers.laserfiche.com/questions/85723/Quickfields-for-generating-pages-for-PDF-files#86011 for a similar situation and one solution to try (checking the "If the entry already has Laserfiche pages, overwrite them" checkbox).

Does this happen with other PDFs too? Specifically, I'd test PDFs from a different source and other PDFs from the same source.  PDFs are a  very complex file format and sometimes have oddities that can affect a product's ability to understand them.

I'd also suggest opening a support case through your solution provider so that you can attach session and PDF(s) that are failing.

I don't know about Universal Capture...isn't that used when you're scanning from a PC folder instead of scanning from a repository folder?  The PDFs with which I'm having a problem  are in a repository folder and I'm using LFCE in Quick Fields to rescan them. Also, this is not a literal "pages" issue, as I'm not referring to Laserfiche Pages; in fact, the issue is that the output file from Quick Fields is a zero byte file with no content whatsoever.

The vast majority of PDFs are imported to the repository via ImportAgent.  There are some older ones that were migrated from another system; basically having been downloaded directly from the old legacy system and then copied into the repository directly.  Those are the PDFs that I think are the issue.  I will submit a case via my VAR and see what LF has to say.

That appears to have done the trick.  It was just confusing to consider that option since the PDF wasn't created by Laserfiche and my thought process concluded that it wouldn't have Laserfiche pages to overwrite!

Thanks.
