I am finding that field rules do not take into account side by side expansion

For example on this form I want 2 fields side by side, the right of which is determined by a field rule. Either 1 of 2 fields could be the right most field depending on conditions.

However because of this, the fields are shrunk down making room for the hidden field while there is extra white space and less space to type. I would much rather have it fill the space with whatever fields are showing and dynmically change the canvas just as it does when I manually put fields side by side. Saving space for a field that might be possibly shown is not really nessasary.
