Feature Request: Filter/View Forms Instances Errors

Hello,

Sometimes I'll have a situation where I get a suspended instance notification from Forms, but by the time I get in to look at it the task has either retried automatically or been retried by someone else.

When that happens, it can be quite the hassle for me to track down the instance to see what errors were actually tracked.

This probably wouldn't be as big of a problem for most people because part of the challenge is that we have a LOT of instances so even searching by instance id can be slow/tedious/unreliable.

However, I think there's some changes that could make things much easier with regard to monitoring system errors.

 

1) Show the error log icon/link in the instance details page

/Forms/Home/ProcessMonitoring#/monitoring/instances/process/

As far as I know, the only way to see the errors in Forms is to click the row from the instance monitoring page and use the error log/clipboard icon.

However, if the task isn't currently suspended or terminated, it can be a bit of a chore to search for it so having that log also show in the details page would mean it's easily accessible when you click the default link in the suspension notice email.

 

2) Add a way to filter on any instance with an error message

If we could filter instances that have error messages, independent of the current status, much like we can in workflow, that would help a lot in identifying what types of errors we run into.

Having this be filterable would give us a much easier way to keep track of instances that have issues even if they retry automatically, which is nice because errors like that can slip under the radar.

Forms itself is always a better starting point than event viewer logs.

 

3) Add an Error Log to the Administration page

This could be convenient place to log all the different errors that are already tracked in the Forms database.

Although a lot can be found in the Event Viewer logs, having a dedicated spot for the errors that pop-up from suspended/terminated instances and such would be handy for performance evaluation/optimization.

Hi Jason,

    Thanks for the feature request, we will look into improving the error messages display and filtering to make it convenient for troubleshooting based on the ideas you shared.
