Question

PhotoDocs Replacement

asked on March 30, 2022

Good Morning,

Our firm in the past was heavy users of PhotoDocs in the past and we are looking for a new one for image manipulation.  Quick Fields is one option, but I'd prefer not to have it put on multiple machines and plus using Quick Fields as a replacement for PhotoDocs is like using jackhammer instead of a regular hammer to hang a picture.

Hi Jeff,

Could you provide details on what specifically you need in terms of image manipulation functionality and how you were using PhotoDocs? Once we have that information, we can likely suggest alternatives.

Hi Sam,

Do you have any recommendations for TIFF image crop within Laserfiche? We have one customer who refuses to upgrade past 10.3.1 client as they heavily use photodocs to crop and tidy up scanned images (large architecture plans that are scanned in on a big scanner).

I've thought long and hard, and don't have any answer for them at this point!

Cheers!

If I recall correctly, Photodocs works with the version 11 suite. Photodocs itself was just not upgraded and will not be updated in the future. It might even still work with version 12 when it's released since the SDK is usually backwards compatible.

Thanks Blake, Photodocs was deprecated in 10.4 onwards, and I haven't been able to use this since version 10.3.1.

Going with the logic it might still work in 10.4/11/12 I've tried to manually installed just the lfphotodocs_en.msi installer from 10.3.1 but it's still not present anywhere in windows client 11 to click and open documents from Laserfiche in photodocs to edit.

Is there some secret attribute I maybe need to add, is this working for you in LF11?

I think you have to use Windows Client 10.x (the latest supported 10.4.x client probably works).

The PhotoDocs context menu options were likely explicitly removed in Client 11. I don't know that for sure, but it's the most likely reason you aren't seeing the option in 11.

Thanks Sam, I've been playing around with this in V10.4 as well, and although photodocs is still there as an option/button, it's greyed out. So something underneath must be telling the LF client photodocs isn't a thing anymore in 10.4 onwards.

All the customer wants to do is crop a TIFF image in Laserfiche, didn't realise that was going to be so hard!

This will probably just end up as a feature request.

We confirmed that it was removed from Windows Client 11. Didn't find anything suggesting it was blocked in 10.4 though. Internal dev notes suggested being greyed out might mean Client 10.x can't locate the PhotoDocs executable.

Thanks Sam, my colleague Dan has raised this as a feature request, as getting this working in 10.4 is only a temporary fix until December 31, 2026, we'll need this feature in 11 onwards (and cloud for that matter!)
