Why does forms save copies of the upload due to bad field values

We got this error in a forms save to repository task that saves an uploaded document.

One or more required fields were omitted or had a blank value. [9066]

In the past this would just wait for your to fix the issue and retry the task. Now in version 10.4 (10.4.2.665) it saves the document anyways and continues to save another copy every few weeks. We have 11 copies of the uploaded document saved all without the template being assigned. All saved by Forms.

I will work with them on resolving the field issue, but why all the copies of the document?

Hi Chad,

It is because saving the document is separated as setting the metadata for the document, so the document can be saved first even if there is error to set the metadata. This is useful for troubleshooting as you can check the saved document to see what is the problem of the metadata. And because of the auto retry mechanism so there will be several copies generated if the service task keeps suspended when retry. You can remove all the duplicated entries after you resolve the issue for the metadata.

Oh, normally we save a form with the template, and if there is a template issue it prevents saving the form until the issue can be fixed. Seems odd it would work differently with an attachment.

The behaviors for save form and save attachment are indeed different, we will look into improving it.

We have improved the behavior in Forms 11 Update 3.

If get error when set the field value for the attachment, the file will be deleted to avoid generate multiple copies.
