Question

Webtool Agent-Documentation??

asked on January 21, 2022

Hello,

I would like to know more about the Webtools Agent that users can download from the Web Client.

I see this note "This option is available if required for support purposes." If this is to be used for troubleshooting WC connection issues, what exactly does this tool entail when being downloaded?

I saw another post that states this is to be used for interoperability with things such as scanning and the Web Client.

I would ultimately like to know as we have a customer who is using Windows Auth for the WC connection and upon the 1st launch of the page and clicking on the WA Blue button the page redirects to an error URL with the following error- "The Laserfiche 11.0 web server has encountered am error and could not complete your request".  but if they refresh the page they are taken to their Repository (Logged in). All subsequent logins with that browser session work without issue.

Not finding any errors in the WC Logs, so I want to see if we need to use the Webtools Agent to gather more information, but I want to be able to tell the customer what this entails with installing it.

Thanks for the feedback,

Jeff Curtis

Hi Jeff,

The web tools agent is a local tool that allows the web client to work with locally installed modules like Scanning and the Office Plugin. It is installed automatically alongside using those modules from the web client, but the download option is there in case you need to manually install it for some reason. So they should already have it installed in the first place to use these modules.

Hi Justin,

Still no sign on any documentation for this sadly, that I can find at least. Please can I chase this up.

In the interim, can Laserfiche confirm if communication between the client and server on the webtools ports is encrypted?

Cheers!

Chris

The web tools agent is included with the current versions of Scanning, Office Plugin, and similar applications. It's what allows the web client/browser to communicate with them, in order to e.g. launch scanning when the user clicks the scanning button.

That link is to allow users to directly upgrade their version of the agent, rather than re-installing one of the components that includes it. So it's not to help troubleshoot issues, it's in case updating the agent would resolve the issue.

Just an FYI - This link seems to have changed/disappeared.

I'd like to second this request for some additional documentation on the Webtools Agent.

Of particular concern is that when a user first opens Web Access, they are prompted whether or not to allow the Agent to work with that site. What happens if they click "No"? How do we reset that selection? If I'm troubleshooting an issue I'd like to see a list of allowed and/or disallowed sites and potentially make changes to that, or at least reset the choice so we can redo it the next time we open Web Access.

Hi Pieter,

Are you talking about additional documentation beyond what was added coming out of this thread and other discussions: Webtools Agent

Hey Pava-

I guess the short answer is yes, I want more. Though I was scared that I missed something when you posted a link...still scared to ask you a question I should be able to answer myself (which I sort of did last week).

To be clear, I'm using self-hosted and so didn't check Cloud documentation. I think the page you linked to only shows up for Cloud.

So, there is some stuff in there that is helpful. But I'm thinking about a case where a user is complaining that something isn't working and I need to figure out why not. The Agent doesn't show up as an extension in the browser that I can see, so nothing to check there. And in the installation directory I similarly don't see any configuration settings.

So, for a specific question, if a user clicks "No" on this pop-up, how would I diagnose that? How would I reset it so I can say "Yes"?

It's ok Pieter, you're allowed to ask about something that was actually documented at least, oh... 3 times, I'd say! wink

Good point about that page only being in the Cloud docs. In this case the behaviors are the same so it should apply to both, I'll follow up with your additional comments and also to see if we can get it added to the Laserfiche 12 docs as well. Thanks!

Clicking "No" on the warning dialog blocks the host until the Webtools Agent restarts, the block is not persistent. To restart the webtools agent, terminate "Laserfiche Webtools Agent.exe" from task manager and launch it again from "c:\Program Files (x86)\Laserfiche\Webtools Agent".
