I was hoping for further explanation on what exactly happens to records with either a "superseded by" or "selectively retain" retention schedules. 

I read an article that superseded by only kicks in in there's a "supersedes" document link created. So if no link exists they don't get cut off? I'm not sure hoe "selective retention" is done, is this a manual process?
