Question

Save to Laserfiche, truncate name or truncate dataset?

asked on October 25, 2021

Is there a way that the Save to Laserfiche forms activity can truncate a dataset so that the resulting name is kept to a maximum number of characters?  In my case, it is the dataset for the upload(s) that is causing the entry name to be huge if there were too many uploads.

Can you save a truncated text value in a hidden field and then use that value in your save?

What would be the easiest way to do this?

I would try... Create a field that is limited to, say, 30 characters.  Use a calculation to give it the full length field value (presumably, it would be truncated to its max length).  Use a field rule to hide this field from the user.  Save to Repository using the truncated value.  Duplicate names would get an auto-assigned suffix.

Actually, if you are trying to shorten the file names of files that have been uploaded, this won't work.  Let me rethink this.

I can't work out how to do this within Forms for uploaded file names.  I would try sending the file to a holding location and then have a workflow trigger off of the document creation.  The workflow would then rename and store the document in the final location.
