I have a new document that I am adding to an already existing folder. I drag and drop the new document into the folder.

How can I get the folder's metadata to be automatically copied into the new document?

In the Metadata Field setup (where you set up the metadata fields) put %(parent) as the default value and it will inherit the value from the folder's assigned Metadata
Wow, Steve, I didn't know you could do that! I'll have to look and see if maybe I should change to that. Currently, I am using a workflow to do that.
