Custom Report - Table - Missing trailing zeros for field values

asked on October 15, 2021

Hi,

We have a form that captures inventory item numbers, and some of these IV items have numbers that start with zeros. This field is setup as a "Single Line" text field.

When downloading this report from Forms as an Excel file, the trailing zeroes disappear in that field. However, if I download it as a CSV, I can see the trailing zeros are visible in that file.

I can see that if this field was a "Number" field that it would export like that in Excel, but if it's a text field, should it not export that whole field as a string, no matter what it is like?

Thanks for advising if there's anything we can do or if this classified as a bug?

This is not a Laserfiche issue. Excel has its own rules for determining the date type for a column and it formats it according to that data type. In this case, it looks like Excel determined those are numbers and formatted them accordingly (numbers don't have leading zeros). You can change the format by right-clicking on the column and switching its formatting to text.

Right-clicking on that column and switching to text format won't help me get my original data back in its original form. Values of 000123 and 0000123 shows up as the same value 123, but I won't know which one is which because of the way the data is exported.
