Direct Approval is done in Forms, but from the details pane. Using Direct Approval allows a user to submit a form without filling out required fields. So to determine if they used this option, add a hidden required field with a default value to the approval form. Since the form must be opened, before the default is applied, and using Direct Approval does not open the form, you can tell they used this option by checking if the field is empty.
