Just wanted to bump this request. We have several needs for being able to setup an API as a data source in Forms. More and more of our data sources are being hosted by third parties that have API's and we do not have direct access to a database. It isn't efficient or feasible to have the form submitted and then have Workflow do the API calls and send the information back to Forms. It needs to be done while the end user is interacting with the form.
