Laserfiche applications work with Microsoft SQL Express 2016+. You should not experience any issues during Laserfiche installation. If you do use SQL Server Express with Laserfiche, use the latest available version (currently 2019) for security and performance reasons.

It is critical to be aware of the limitations of SQL Express, particularly its 10 GB database size limit. It is not difficult for a repository, Workflow, or Forms (especially if storing attachments in the database instead of the file system) database to exceed 10 GB. This article provides more details on the limitations:

I would not advise using SQL Express for a Production Laserfiche system with more than a few users and low activity. SQL Express can sometimes be appropriate for non-Production Dev/Test systems.

So, Does SQL Express work with Forms Professional?

Yes, all Laserfiche applications work with SQL Express.

I recommend configuring Forms for file volume storage to help keep the Forms database smaller:

It used to be that your software was licensed for SQL Express or full SQL Server

You're right, thanks for bringing that up. Under the Avante licensing model, Laserfiche Server and Workflow Server have different licenses at different price points for SQL Express and SQL Server support. A license for full SQL Server can also be used with SQL Express, but not the other way around.

No other license model at this time (any Subscription flavor, Rio, Team/United) has any restrictions on the edition of SQL Server you can use.
