add custom field in Quick Fields

Is it possible to ADD a custom field or some type of marker to identify a department?

We have 6 different departments that use one PDF with form fields. I need this marker so when I take the PDF into WorkFlow I can route the PDF to one of  the  three different directors to sign depend on the marker. And no I don't want to add a radio button in the PDF for I wish not to have those buttons show up in the final PDF once it filed away in the repository. I want to be hidden from the users.

Quick Fields has an Assign Token Value task to let you make custom tokens. And it has a Conditional logic activity for IF-THEN logic. Hopefully those are available to you; QF is very granular in it's licensing and I'm not sure what's required to access those activities.

Why wouldn't a metadata field work?

I guess I typed it wrong. Yes a metadata field is what I'm looking for. But I would like for that field to be added at the point where the PDF is being processed in QF and not anytime prior to being imported into QF.
