Drag and Drop from Repo to Forms Upload

asked on June 18, 2021

Often there are situations where you need to upload a Laserfiche file to a form. It would be very convenient if you could drag and drop that file directly from the Laserfiche Repository to the Forms Upload button. I've seen a few questions ask about this. Most state it can't be done. You have to download the file from Laserfiche and then upload it to forms.

This is not the case...usually.

I cannot drag and drop PDFs from the Laserfiche Repo to Forms, but I have had some success with TIFFs. However, after some trial and error, I see that a file larger than 20 MB will not upload when attempting to drag and drop. I have repeatedly been able to drag and drop a 19 MB file from the Repo to Forms, but if I add a page, increasing it to over 20 MB, it will not work. There may be other factors that determine whether or not a file can be dragged and dropped, as a client was struggling to drag and drop some files that I was able to drag and drop. Also, this was only possible in the Desktop Client, not the Web Client.

Because a workaround exists, downloading from Laserfiche then Uploading to Forms, this is not a major issue. But for the sake of convenience, I'm surprised by this limitation. I am wondering if anyone else has gotten the Drag and Drop feature to work, and if so, if they have recognized what other factors are required for a document to do this?

Thank you.

I have a form where I really want the user to be able to attach documents from the Repository, and we use Windows Client.

On this particular form, I given them written instructions to get a shortcut to the file to their desktop and then upload that shorcut.  I don't have the form in front of me, but if I remember correctly, the trick is holding Ctrl-Alt-Shift while dragging to the Desktop to get the shortcut.   I've never tried dragging right to the Upload button, but it would probably work.

Shortcut files would hit size limits like a downloaded file would, because they are small by definition.  Our staff are also used to opening shortcuts from Forms to the Repository because I have dozens of places where Workflow populates the info to create one into hidden fields on the form, and then Javascript generates that shorcut file from that info when they click a button.

However, this manual creation of a shortcut can be a pain for staff, so this really only works for me because this particular form is only used by a handful of staff, so I can assist them more directly than I can with more widely utilized forms.  If I needed it to be more widely used, I'd probably make a short training video or something, with a link to it directly on the form.
