Windows Client Installer for Cloud Customers

asked on May 11, 2021

How do our cloud customers install the Windows Client?

Can the go somewhere on the website using their Laserfiche login to install?

Do they need a support account with download access? The support site has never had a Windows Client installer available, so I would expect it to be accessed directly from the Cloud site, using the Laserfiche user account instead.

Currently you would have to download the entire Laserfiche 11 package. Cloud users have access to the support and are governed by the same security as self-hosted customers. As a solution provider, I believe you have rights to manage their access and download rights.

Out of curiosity, why do they want to use the Windows client?

Hi @████████,

Just jumping on this thread since deploying the windows client is also a pain at our organization. We unfortunately have to deploy it as importing folders is not supported in the web client and can only be done in the Windows client. Additionally, opening documents in their native application (with the exception of Office documents) is not supported from the Web client. Bring this feature parity to the Web client would making using LF cloud exclusively though the Web client possible.

Thanks,

Henry

When I go to grant roles, I do not see any accounts to grant access for download rights. Are you sure Cloud is creating accounts for them, we can not grant download rights until the account is created.

I am not sure why they want it, but they submitted a ticket asking how to install and I would like to reply with reasonably easy to follow instructions. I was expecting a "Install Windows Client" somewhere in the menu's of the system, which led to a download of the Client installer only.

Are Cloud users not using Windows Client? How do other customer's install Windows Client? I can't imagine they are all signing up to download the entire server package.

With on-prem we can have IT throw the installer on the file server, but the whole idea of Cloud is to not have local servers.

I had a request this week for this as well. Customer is trialing Cloud but prefers the ability to customize the window panes of the Windows Client where they could move them where they want as opposed to Webclient where they can just be toggled off or on I’m told.

I would again like to bring up this request for a Windows Client Installer for cloud customers.  The full LF download is rather large and only the Windows Client is relevant for LF Cloud customers.  It would greatly simplify things for the customer to have just an installer packet for what they can use without all the superfluous installers.

This is a much needed item. Laserfiche should provide a downloadable installer. A client evaluation LF Cloud found they cannot copy and paste documents from desktop into a folder in the repository: a feature possible using windows client. We need this installer as a matter of urgency?

@Bert Warren please were you able to get the Windows Client o found a workaround? Kindly share if you did, THanks.

It is available here on the support site in the Laserfiche 11 full package. My OP was about how it was difficult for end users to find, but only got 1 thumbs up frown it seems no one uses the client any longer.

The only reason I ever need it is to upload folders, download large quantities of entries, and to change metadata across multiple entries.

Chad - We still routinely deploy the client if the customer wants a richer UI experience and also deploy it if the customer is going to be using a local scanner.  We typically download the entire installation application to a local network share and then show them how to do the client install from that.

BTW - I have always intended to get around to pulling the client installation out of the larger suite installation package for instances just like this but just have never made the time.

That is what our customers are doing as well, they just feel it is a confusing process compared to other web services which have a quick windows download link right from the main menu.

Usually only IT has a support account and some power users, the average user does not have a support account or download access. If IT is no longer managing software installations centrally (which is becoming more common for businesses using primarily SAAS vendors) then the users expect to be able to click and download it themselves from the service website.

They can quickly install the Scanner tools, but not the full Windows Client.

I agree that this is something that should be built into the Cloud environment.  There could be a "download" option in the "Repository Administration" area of Cloud, maybe under "Integrations", if the goal is to only allow admins to download it.  Though it doesn't matter where it is put, just PLEASE put it somewhere the client can directly download/install it instead of making us provide them with the massive LF 11 install file!
