Question

Is there, or was there ever, a feature in Web Client to edit office documents directly in the browser?

asked on April 22, 2021 Show version history

We have a customer that we upgraded to the latest version of Web Client. They said that before the upgrade, Laserfiche used to work like Google Docs, you could edit office documents right in the browser.

Now those features are gone?

I looked around with them and I do not see any ability to edit documents in a web browser like Google Docs.

The documentation says that you can only edit documents with Office unless you have a Office Server.

Yes, it requires that the organization hosts their own Office Online Server to work though. You can read about it in the help file here under the Office Online Server section.

Ok, I saw that option. But there is no built-in option for this it seems. I thought I saw it somewhere.

You can create some office documents directly in the Web Client, but you cannot edit them without the Office Online Server. If you are using Laserfiche Cloud it is included.

Oh, I bet I saw it in Laserfiche Cloud then!

To clarify what is available:

Any self-hosted solution can preview Office docs with the Laserfiche Document Preview Service. If the organization has Office Online Server, they can configure that and then edit in-browser.

Any cloud solution can preview using Office 365. Editing in-browser does require an O365 account (from Microsoft).

For previewing Office documents using the Laserfiche Document Preview Service, are only Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files supported? I couldn't find it specified any where in the help files.

It handles those three, as well as the Open Office equivalents.
