Question

Does Laserfiche use Boolean operators when searching?

asked on April 13, 2021

I've done an advanced search using two different fields, when they're filled out the correct documents come up. However I put the same two field values in the common search and no documents appear. Am I doing something wrong, this seems like strange behaviour.

The other way around, having no documents appear in the advanced search makes a lot more sense due to it's accuracy, but I'm confused why nothing appears when I use the common search.

When I want to search for two terms, can I use Boolean operators to indicate this? I'm not sure if this would solve my issue in the common search, but any search syntax would be appreciated!

Hi Catherine,

My recollection is that Quick Search does not support boolean operators, only Advanced Search.

What Quick Search does is drop your search term into your selected search types as the value.

As an example, imagine I have two fields:

  1. FirstName
  2. LastName

and a document with field values of:

  1. FirstName: "Samuel"
  2. LastName: "Carson"

a Quick Search on All Fields with the search term "Samuel Carson" will not return this document because:

  1. FirstName: "Samuel" does not match %(SearchTerm): "Samuel Carson"
  2. FirstName: "Carson" does not match %(SearchTerm):"Samuel Carson"

By default, Quick Search will find partial matches when the Search Term is a substring of the value, but not when it's larger.

I.e., if I have field FullName: "Samuel Carson", a Quick Search for either "Samuel" or "Carson" will hit a partial match and return the result, but a search for "Samuel Carson" will not hit a partial match on the FirstName: "Samuel" field.
