Question

Why does simple form formula instruction (input from another field) sometimes not work?

asked on March 24, 2021

What would be stopping this simple formula from working?  I use this quite often and it works.  But occasionally when I add it on another form, it does not!  And in this case it works in testing, just not on the live forms or the pdf or image copies that are emailed out or saved to Laserfiche.

For added information, the address fields are "collected" in table fields into a hidden single line collection field so that I can simplify the results into a separate single line field on the approval stages and saved copies.  It's a cleaner look, since the table that takes up more space and doesn't line up with other fields.

Hey @████████!

Hard to say for certain without seeing more of your process, but based on the comment that it works on some forms but not on some other ones when copied, I would guess the most likely possibilities are:

  1. Field Rules not set to retain values of hidden fields.
  2. Differences in field variables used in the forms, so the formulas no longer apply correctly.

Thanks, Matthew.  Checked both of those about 3-4 times and can't find a problem.

I even added a second line to the field rules to hide the original address fields on the approval form, hoping that if I target the actual hidden field that is hidden and make it also say Save the data, that might help, but it didn't.

Huh, decided to run another test instead of just opening up the current test approval stage, and found that it works now.  The only thing I can see that it might have been is that last change on the hidden fields... adding the second line to directly target the hidden collection field to say Save the data.

That's funny.

Sometimes I've noticed occassionally some changes may not reflect until I've gone in and out of a form a couple times - like a new field not being available in variable pickers.  Maybe it was just a weird delayed thing like that.  Or as you said, the specific hiding change on the Field Rules layout.

In any case, I'm glad to hear that it seems to be working better now.

It is funny that it would require that last change, because I don't need to do that last step on the other forms and the formula is exactly the same with exactly the same variables, etc.
