Question

What might cause an error upon selecting "Save to Draft"?

asked on February 5, 2021

We have a massive form that we require be filled out for applicants of our police department. When done properly, it takes about 2 hours to fill out, on average.

I'm getting reports of applicants attempting to save their form as a draft, Laserfiche Forms going to a white screen, and them losing all of their data and the form re-loading but blank.

I've also been told that the form errored out upon submission with a "laserfische forms encountered a problem. refresh this form and try again" error, and upon doing so, again, the form was re-loaded, losing all of their data.

Is there anything we might be able to look for on our end that might be causing these things? The most frustrating part of this all is that we still have successful submissions coming through. These errors are sporadic, but enough of an issue to cause major concern.

Any help would be appreciated, as we're losing potential applicants as a result. Thanks!

We ended up figuring out the issue. It's not at all something I would've thought to ever check so I'll share here.

Apparently there is a "default form timeout" setting that exists on the server that Forms lives on. It was part of a large .txt file. It defaults to 20 minutes, so if a form is left idle (no new information is entered into any fields) for 20 minutes, the next action taken would cause an error. That includes navigating between pages, submitting the form, or saving as a draft.

We increased that time, acknowledging the increased load it would have on our servers, and haven't had issues since!

Hi Dylan,

There is not enough information to tell what is causing the error. Could you check the event log at time the error happened for more detailed log? Forms event log is under  Applications and Services Logs -> Laserfiche -> Forms -> App -> Admin and Applications and Services Logs -> Laserfiche -> Forms -> App -> Operational.

Meanwhile, what version of Forms are you on? Upgrading to latest version of Forms is recommended. From Forms 10.4.4, it is supported for end users to be able to recover a failed form submission when there is a back-end error, which should help when the error happens.
