User changes template and fields from old template are lost. Is that expected?

Hello,

We had a user accidentally change the template on a document, and when they went to change the template back to what it was, all the field values that weren't shared between the two templates were gone. Is that expected behavior? For some reason, I was thinking Laserfiche kept those fields as stand-alone fields (not as part of a template) if the template was changed. I know you can keep them using the Assign Field Values activity in Workflow - maybe that's why I'm a little confused about this.

Yeah, that's pretty normal.  You can add the fields that are not part of the template in manually.  But if you completely change the template and don't add those missing fields in, then they are not included or saved.
